Computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) systems are major focus areas of key players in the global market. The CAD/CAM systems market is expected to grow at a highest CAGR of 9.0% during the forecast period. CAD/CAM technology helps technicians fabricate accurate shapes and sizes for dental prostheses. Dentists use CAD/CAM systems to effectively design dental prostheses in a 3D format and manufacture them with the help of milling machines. Restorations designed using these systems are considered to be more durable, close fitting, and efficient than traditional lab-fabricated ones.
CEREC, the first CAD/CAM system, was launched in 1986 by the dental division of Siemens AG (now Sirona Dental Systems). With advantages such as reduction in treatment time and increased digitization, the use of CAD/CAM technology in dentistry is witnessing significant growth in both dental laboratories and general practice settings.
Dental CAD/CAM systems utilize a variety of materials to fabricate prostheses. Ceramic is most commonly used due to its superior quality and high aesthetic value. The use of CAD/CAM-generated prostheses has changed the procedure time for restorative dentistry from multiple sittings to a single-visit procedure. The need for taking a dental impression is eliminated, which reduces manual errors and also time consumed in treatment. Furthermore, the re-work rate of these prostheses is also very low (about 0.4% to 1%) due to complete digitization of the procedure.
CAD/CAM-fabricated prostheses fit perfectly with patients, thereby reducing the possibility of infections at the treatment site. This also leads to less patient trauma, as the near-perfect fit facilitates less manipulation of the surrounding soft tissue.

The European region dominated the global dental CAD/CAM systems market. Factors such as the rapid growth in aging population, growing government expenditure, and reimbursement rate are driving the demand for dental CAD/CAM systems in this region. However, the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region is expected to witness the highest growth in the next five years primarily due to the flourishing healthcare market, growing dental tourism, and lenient regulatory policies, especially in China and India.
